At the heart of this programme is the warm, velvety, and unmistakably human voice of the viola. It is heard through the artistry of Timothy Ridout, Artist-in-Residence of the De Valette Chamber Orchestra and one of the outstanding violists of his generation. A former BBC New Generation Artist and Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellow, winner of First Prize at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, and recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society Young Artist Award, Ridout brings exceptional poise, colour, and expressive depth to Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata, heard here in a version for viola and string orchestra, and to Bruch’s richly lyrical Romance for Viola and Orchestra. The programme turns to another side of Schubert with the dramatic intensity of the Quartettsatz. From the intimate song of the viola, the concert expands into the youthful brilliance of Mendelssohn’s String Octet, heard in a version for string orchestra. Written when Mendelssohn was just sixteen, this astonishing work brings the evening to a dazzling close.
