Teatru Manoel is currently seeking to fill the position of Head (Safety & Security) which forms part of the operations department at Teatru Manoel. The selected candidate will be reporting to the Chief Operations Officer (COO) and is responsible for the overall coordination, implementation, and enforcement of all Health & Safety (H&S) and Security measures at Teatru Manoel.
Further to the above, the Head (Safety & Security) is to ensure the theatre remains compliant with Maltese legislation while safeguarding staff, heritage assets, and the public. Additionally, the postholder will act as a Duty Manager during performances and high-profile events to ensure real-time operational safety and security.
This position requires the successful candidate to work during the evenings, weekends, and public holidays. The successful candidate will be working under the supervision of the Chief Operations Officer and the Chief Executive Officer.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Health & Safety and Compliance
- Develop and maintain comprehensive H&S policies and conduct routine inspections.
- Lead risk assessments for all productions, rehearsals, and technical installations.
- Serve as a permanent member of the Teatru Manoel Occupational Integrity Committee (TMOIC).
- Verify that all equipment brought in by contractors or touring companies has the necessary safety certifications.
- Facilitate internal and external audits and implement corrective action plans.
Security and Asset Protection
- Lead the security personnel at Teatru Manoel.
- Oversee access control for restricted technical zones and sensitive heritage areas.
- Coordinate security detailing for VIP/VVIP events involving state dignitaries.
- Design and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for venue security.
Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness
- Act as the principal coordinator for fire safety, ensuring all fire-fighting equipment and exit routes are operational.
- Organize and document regular fire drills and evacuation exercises for all staff.
- Maintain and update the theatre’s Emergency Response and Evacuation Plan.
Duty Management and Event Oversight
- Operational Presence: Act as the designated Duty Manager for performances and high-risk productions, providing senior-level oversight.
- Authority to Halt: Exercise the authority to stop any rehearsal, production, or work if unsafe practices are identified.
- Incident Command: Lead the response to any accidents, security breaches, or medical emergencies occurring during a shift.
- Crowd Management: Supervise audience flow and front-of-house safety during peak occupancy.
Training and Representation
- In collaboration with the Head (HR & ADMIN), design and deliver safety training for theatre staff.
- Serve as the principal liaison with the Malta Police Force, Civil Protection Department (CPD), and OHSA.
- To undertake other tasks as may be required by the Chief Operations Officer and the Chief Executive Officer.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
A recognised Master’s qualification at MQF Level 7 (subject to a minimum of 60 ECTS/ECVET credits, or equivalent, with regard to programmes commencing as from October 2008) in Occupational Health & Safety or Risk Management or Security Management or Disaster Management or a comparable professional qualification, plus three (3) years relevant work experience of which one (1) year must be in a management position comparable to Scale 8 level or higher in the Public Service.
OR
A recognised Bachelor’s qualification at MQF Level 6 (subject to a minimum of 180 ECTS/ECVET credits, or equivalent, with regard to programmes commencing as from October 2003) in Occupational Health & Safety or Risk Management or Security Management or Disaster Management or a comparable professional qualification, plus five (5) years relevant work experience of which one (1) year must be in a management position comparable to Scale 8 level or higher in the Public Service.
- Good police conduct;
- Read and write in the official language/s of Malta;
- Proven experience in theatres, large public venues, event venues, hospitality or similar environments;
- Proven experience in risk assessments, audits, emergency planning and incident investigations;
- Proven experience coordinating security operations and contractor compliance;
- Proven experience in developing security teams and operational procedures is considered a strong asset;
- Fire safety and emergency preparedness certification is considered a strong asset;
- First aid certification is considered a strong asset;
